Foods You Should Eat In Spring
Feeling sluggish after Winter, it’s a perfect time for a Spring clean.
-
In Chinese Medicine each season is associated with an organ of the body and Spring is the Liver
-
The Liver is responsible for the flow of ‘Qi’ around our bodies, blood and emotions. When the Liver is not working as it should, we feel angry or emotional. Our digestion slows down and we often feel sluggish.
The liver is the main detoxification organ in the body. It filters out toxins in our body so they don’t build up in our blood stream. It also processes nutrients absorbed into our body. So happy Liver = happy human.
The Liver channel is especially important for breastfeeding mums as it runs through our breasts and nipples. When this becomes ‘blocked’ it can prevent milk from flowing properly, impacting the ducts in the breast and impairing the let-down reflex. Liver Qi becomes blocked when we are stressed, angry, resentful or frustrated. Many of these feelings are common for new mums. This is also seen in modern medicine where the 'stress hormone' cortisol can reduce your milk supply.
Spring is a time of rejuvenation. It is a time of expansion, seen in the growth of new plants and a renewed sense of energy. Our eating habits should reflect this - incorporating lots of new growth such as greens, sprouts and seeds to shake off the sluggishness of Winter.

Craving sour foods? This could be a sign that your Liver needs a boost. Incorporating foods that help support liver function is important especially in Spring.
